Choose the stay first. Buy a Hakone Freepass only after comparing the same itinerary, origin, operators, uncovered rides and extras.
A one-night Hakone trip can centre on moving between mountain scenery and the lake, or on arriving at a ryokan with enough time for the room, dinner and a long bath. A convenient pass and the cheapest ticket combination are different decisions. You do not need to add sightseeing simply to justify a pass you have already bought.
This guide gives you a checklist for that comparison. It does not calculate a universal break-even point: we have not verified every individual fare for your route or travel date.
At a glance
- Shinjuku or Odawara? Compare the pass version with the journey you will actually use.
- Which operator? Check every ride by operator and section; being inside Hakone does not establish coverage.
- What remains payable? Add uncovered rides and optional extras to the pass price.

Complete this journey checklist before paying
Amounts are left open intentionally. Enter current official fares for your chosen route rather than borrowing somebody else’s sightseeing total.
Two-column comparison. At high zoom, scroll the table sideways.
| Decision | What to enter and check |
|---|---|
| Journey into Hakone | Enter your stations, operator and current fare. Confirm the precise pass version and record any uncovered portion. |
| Last leg to the ryokan | Enter the stops and operator, or a confirmed free hotel shuttle. Do not assume coverage; record any separate fare. |
| Sightseeing you genuinely want | Enter each ride, operator and fare. Check designated coverage and record uncovered portions. |
| Journey after checkout | Enter your actual onward destination and current fare. Check the return you will use and any uncovered portion. |
| Optional upgrades | Enter the current charge—for example, a Romancecar limited-express ticket. Check it separately and add the extra charge. |
The comparison is an editorial planning tool. A blank amount is a prompt to verify the current fare, not an assumption that the journey is free or covered.
Compare the same itinerary two ways
- Choose the stay: decide how much sightseeing you genuinely want around the ryokan evening.
- Fix the origin: identify whether Shinjuku, Odawara or another arrival point matches your trip.
- Check every ride: record its operator, section, individual fare and pass coverage.
- Compare totals: individual tickets plus chosen extras versus the pass price plus every uncovered ride and extra.
Start with the departure point, not the pass name
On 3 October 2026, Odakyu’s official page listed the adult two-day Hakone Freepass at ¥7,100 from Shinjuku and ¥6,000 from Odawara. Three-day versions were also listed. The Shinjuku version includes one Odakyu round trip between Shinjuku and Odawara; the Odawara version does not include that Odakyu journey. A separate limited-express ticket is required for the Romancecar. These are published reference prices, not a quote for your future trip. Source: Odakyu, checked 3 October 2026.
If you are arriving at Odawara from elsewhere, do not compare the Shinjuku pass with your local journeys alone. If you are returning to a different city, do not value an included return journey you will not use. Those are editorial comparison rules, rather than a recommendation to buy either version.
Match each ride to its operator
Hakone Navi lists covered local transport including the Hakone Tozan train and cable car, Hakone Ropeway and Hakone Sightseeing Cruise. Bus coverage is restricted to designated areas and operators; the page explicitly excludes Izu-Hakone Bus. It also notes that weather can suspend services. Being inside Hakone is therefore not enough to establish coverage, and a pass is not a guarantee that your chosen sightseeing route will operate. Source: Hakone Navi, checked 3 October 2026.
The practical question is not “Am I taking a bus?” It is “Which bus operator, on which section?” Save the operator name alongside the stops in your plan. If coverage is unclear, leave the journey out of your assumed savings until you can confirm it.
A hotel example: Ten-yu
Ten-yu’s official access page describes a free hotel shuttle between Gora Station and the hotel. It separately describes an Izu-Hakone Bus route to Ten-yu and warns that the Hakone Freepass cannot be used on that bus. The hotel also warns that shuttle times can change and be affected by traffic. Check its current boarding information before departure. Source: Ten-yu, checked 3 October 2026.
Editorial takeaway: a free hotel shuttle adds no paid fare to your pass comparison. A hotel access route may also contain a paid journey that the pass does not cover. Confirm the last leg before treating two ryokan locations as equally convenient.
Choose the trade-off you prefer
Compare two totals for the same itinerary: individual tickets plus your chosen extras, and the pass price plus all uncovered journeys and extras. Keep attraction admission in a separate comparison: count a verified discount only for an attraction you would visit, without deducting it from this transport-only total. Keep hotel charges out of it too.
For a bath-and-dinner stay with little sightseeing, our editorial advice is to check individual tickets before assuming the pass saves money. For several covered sightseeing journeys, compare those journeys together and decide whether the convenience also matters to you. Neither pattern proves that one ticket is always better.
Before purchasing, recheck the selected pass’s validity dates, coverage, current price and refund/change terms on the official sales page. Check current transport operation and your hotel’s last-leg arrangements separately. This checklist is not a promise of a refund, seat, connection or fare saving.
