Hakone luggage before check-in: delivery, lockers and hotel storage

Decision guide comparing same-day hotel delivery, station storage and confirmed hotel desk storage in Hakone.
Choose delivery, station storage or a confirmed hotel desk before arriving in Hakone. Checked 8 October 2026.

Short answer: use same-day delivery if you reach Hakone-Yumoto before the cutoff and your accommodation appears on the live partner list. Otherwise, choose station storage if you can return before closing, or use the hotel desk only after the exact property confirms it will hold your bag.

The decision in 30 seconds

  • Hotel delivery: no return to the station, but only for current partner facilities and accepted bags.
  • Station storage: the most flexible fallback, but you must collect the bag from the same place before closing.
  • Hotel desk: useful when it fits your route, but confirm the property’s policy for your date; storage does not mean early room access.

A hotel address in Hakone does not by itself prove delivery eligibility, and a station map showing lockers does not promise that a compartment of the right size will be free. Keep a fallback that still leaves enough time for check-in and any meal deadline.

Use same-day hotel delivery from Hakone-Yumoto

The Hakone Luggage Transport Service counter is inside Hakone-Yumoto Station. Its current outbound reception window is 8:30 to 12:00, and bags can be collected at a participating hotel after 15:00. A same-day online reservation must be completed by 11:30, but the bag still has to be handed over at the counter by 12:00.

Timeline comparing same-day hotel delivery and staffed station storage times at Hakone-Yumoto.
Delivery and staffed storage use different cutoffs. Check live information before travel. Checked 8 October 2026.

Eligibility is not area-wide. The operator limits delivery to its current partner facilities, so check the exact accommodation name on the live list before relying on the service.

As checked on 8 October 2026, the published one-way price is JPY 1,500 per regular item up to 140 cm across three dimensions and 15 kg, or JPY 2,500 per large item up to 200 cm and 30 kg. These are checked-date prices, not a promise for a future trip.

Pack around the delivery restrictions

The service excludes items including valuables, precision equipment, portable chargers, fragile items, full-size umbrellas, strollers, unpackaged bottles and oversized or overweight baggage. The operator also warns that deliveries may be suspended during typhoons, snow or other disruptions, and that some Lake Ashi-area arrangements can change in early January. Carry valuables, medication, travel documents and anything needed before 15:00 yourself.

If delivery does not work, use station storage

The official Hakone-Yumoto Station guide marks coin lockers and temporary luggage drop-off. The staffed Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center is just outside the ticket gate and can take bags that do not fit in a locker.

  1. Bring photo identification and ask about the current fee when depositing the bag.
  2. Current acceptance runs from 9:00 to 17:30; collect the bag by 18:00.
  3. For luggage over 160 cm across three dimensions or over 25 kg, consult staff before relying on the service.
  4. Allow time to return to Hakone-Yumoto; storage is not delivery.

The official pages do not publish live locker availability. If your route starts farther uphill, the Gora Station guide also marks coin lockers and paid temporary drop-off, but it does not publish current hours, sizes or availability. Verify conditions at the station rather than copying the Hakone-Yumoto rules to Gora.

Confirm the policy for your exact hotel

Ask whether the property will hold luggage before check-in on your date, where to leave it, when the desk can receive it and whether any item restrictions apply. Confirm hotel storage separately from station-to-hotel delivery: one does not establish eligibility for the other.

Verified example: Hakone Suimeisou

Hakone Suimeisou’s official FAQ says the hotel can keep luggage before check-in and after check-out. The property is about a two-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station, so walking there first may avoid a later return to station storage. This example does not establish another hotel’s policy or prove that Suimeisou appears on the separate delivery partner list.

Suimeisou currently lists check-in from 14:00, says early check-in is not offered, and asks dinner guests to check in by around 18:00. Reconfirm the arrangement for your booking, then review Hakone Suimeisou’s room and access guide.

Build luggage into a car-free Hakone plan

Start with the Kanto destinations page, then use Where to stay in Hakone without a car to match a base to your transport route. One night or two in Hakone? helps protect enough time for the stay instead of letting baggage collection create an extra return journey.

Before travel: reopen the official service page, confirm the live partner list and cutoffs, ask your hotel about its current policy, and keep valuables and same-day essentials with you.
